Red Sox place Benintendi on DL with knee injury

The Boston Red Sox have placed prized outfielder Andrew Benintendi on the disabled list after he suffered a knee injury during Wednesday's game, the team announced Thursday morning.

Benintendi was initially diagnosed with a left knee sprain after awkwardly trying to escape a rundown while on second base. He had to be helped off the field by training staff, and did not return.

The 22-year-old underwent an MRI Thursday morning, though results proved inconclusive. Benintendi will undergo further tests when the team returns to Boston.

"We just have to wait and see what comes out of this and depending on the findings, what is the safest thing for Andrew to get him back on the field," manager John Farrell told reporters ahead of Thursday afternoon's game in Tampa Bay, according to Jason Mastrodonato of the Boston Herald. "Optimistically, and I say that with all sincerity, optimistically it's still this year."

Farrell also noted that Benintendi's knee did not have a lot of swelling, and his ankle - which buckled on the play - was "surprisingly" not harmed.

Infielder Marco Hernandez was recalled from Triple-A Pawtucket to fill the vacant roster spot, while Farrell said that Chris Young will take over as the primary left fielder.

Benintendi, one of Boston's top prospects, has hit .324/.365/.485 in 21 big-league games since making his debut earlier this month.
