Tampa Bay Rays utility player Nick Franklin was forced to leave an afternoon contest against the San Diego Padres on Wednesday with a contusion after teammate Kevin Kiermaier hit him in the head with a warm-up swing.

Kiermaier's bat smacked the back of Franklin's head prior to the beginning of the first inning.

After being looked at by a team trainer, Franklin stayed in the game and scored on a Brad Miller home run, but eventually exited as a precaution and will undergo further examination.

The 25-year-old was slashing .295/.362/.516 with four home runs and 23 RBIs across 95 at-bats for the Rays entering the game.
