New York Yankees starter Nathan Eovaldi was removed prior to the second inning Wednesday against the Boston Red Sox with discomfort in his right elbow, the club announced.
The right-hander, who had thrown just 12 pitches in the game, is headed back to New York, where he'll undergo further testing.
With a fastball averaging 98 mph in 2016, according to Brooks Baseball, Eovaldi looked off Wednesday as his four-seamer maxed out at 94.5 mph in his first pitch of the contest.
Elbow discomfort is a worrying symptom for Eovaldi considering the Yankees starter already underwent Tommy John surgery on his right elbow in his junior year in high school.
He was replaced on the mound by Chasen Shreve to begin the second inning.
