Yankees officially release A-Rod

Alex Rodriguez's playing career in the Bronx is now officially over, as the New York Yankees released the controversial star Saturday, the team announced.

New York is still on the hook for the $27.1 million remaining on the three-time MVP's contract.

Yankees general manager Brian Cashman offered Rodriguez a role to remain with the club as a special adviser, though the 41-year-old has yet to officially accept the position.

Rodriguez finished 1-4 in his final game with New York against the Tampa Bay Rays on Friday, recording an RBI double in the first inning. He was later allowed to play his old position at third base one final time in the ninth for one out by manager Joe Girardi.

In 12 seasons in the Empire State, Rodriguez conquered nearly all there was to conquer. A seven-time All-Star with New York, Rodriguez earned MVP honors twice with the club before winning his first and only World Series title of his career in 2009.

He also led the league in home runs twice, launching 48 in 2005 and an MLB-best 54 in 2007, an astonishing year when he also led the big leagues in runs scored (143), RBIs (156), slugging percentage (.645), and OPS (1.067).

In corresponding roster moves, the Yankees promoted prospects Aaron Judge and Tyler Austin. The club also optioned right-hander Ben Heller to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
