Gibbons: 'We're still debating' about what to do with Sanchez

The Toronto Blue Jays don't even appear to be certain about what to do with Aaron Sanchez.

Just two days after general manager Ross Atkins confirmed the 24-year-old would make one or two more starts before moving to the bullpen, Blue Jays manager John Gibbons offered reporters seemingly contradictory comments.

"Truthfully, we're still debating what's actually going to happen," he told reporters, according to MLB.com's Gregor Chisholm. "Nothing's locked in stone yet."

The ongoing storyline of whether the Blue Jays' top starting pitcher will be heading to the bullpen because of an innings limitation has been a hot topic in Toronto and Gibbons didn't help make things any clearer.

When questioned further about whether or not Sanchez would be heading to the bullpen, Gibbons could only reply:

"I have no info for you right at this moment."

After acquiring left-hander Francisco Liriano from the Pittsburgh Pirates in a trade deadline deal, it seemed almost certain Sanchez' time in the rotation was over for the time being, but that may not be the case.

"We haven't determined yet what the right time is, what the right approach is," Blue Jays president Mark Shapiro said on Sportsnet 590 The Fan Tuesday. "At some point he's not going to start anymore this year. He will not run 230 innings and pitch through October. That's not going to happen."

The idea of shifting Sanchez back to the bullpen has been floating through the minds of the Blue Jays brass since spring training, with the young hurler already pitching a career high 139.1 innings. But, with the All-Star posting an incredible 11-1 record with an American League-leading 2.71 ERA, his loss could turn out to be a big one for the contending Blue Jays, especially considering Sanchez isn't feeling worse for wear.

"I feel strong. I haven't even broken a sweat," he told Sportsnet's Ben Nicholson-Smith Monday. "I don't feel fatigued. I haven't felt fatigued all year."
