White Sox pitcher Ranaudo homers at Wrigley for 1st career hit

Anthony Ranaudo was acquired by the Chicago White Sox in May, and his start Wednesday against the crosstown rival Cubs was his first appearance in a White Sox uniform.

He may get a second turn after this.

The right-hander took Jason Hammel's 0-1 offering in the fifth inning to the opposite field and into the basket for a solo home run, the first hit of his professional career, including the minors.

Ranaudo, who came into Wednesday's game sporting an 0-for-7 career line with five strikeouts, became the first American League pitcher to homer this season and the second Junior Circuit pitcher ever to hit one out of Wrigley Field; Detroit Tigers left-hander Daniel Norris became the first last August.

He's also the first White Sox pitcher to homer in his team debut since reliever Jack Salveson on June 14, 1935 against the Washington Senators, according to CSN Chicago's Christopher Kamka.

When he wasn't busy swinging a hot bat and giving himself a 1-0 lead, Ranaudo was mowing down the Cubs on the mound. The 26-year-old took a no-hitter into the sixth inning before allowing a Kris Bryant home run that tied the game at 1-1.
