Ichiro Suzuki is three hits away from becoming the 30th player in major-league history to reach 3,000.

The Miami Marlins outfielder picked up a single in the eighth inning of Tuesday's game with the Philadelphia Phillies to pick up career hit No. 2,997.

"Ichi is an amazing player," manager Don Mattingly said following the game. "I feel very fortunate to have him with our club this year. He's been a joy to have."

Ichiro has enjoyed a successful 16th season in a limited role with the Marlins. He entered the night slashing .335/.411/.390 in 84 games.

The 42-year-old would join Alex Rodriguez as the only active players with at least 3,000 hits.
