The New York Yankees no longer view Alex Rodriguez as a viable option defensively and the former All-Star is hovering around the Mendoza line, still the club does not have intentions of parting ways with the 40-year-old slugger.

"(Releasing A-Rod) is not something that's being considered," Yankees general manager Brian Cashman told reporters.

Owed $21 million in both this season and next, Rodriguez found himself out of the lineup once again Monday as Carlos Beltran will serve as the team's DH.

Coming off a strong 2015 season in which he restored some of his image during a 33-homer year, Rodriguez is hitting just .206/.256/.364 with nine home runs and six doubles in 58 games this season. He has just one home run in his last 19 games and is 4-for-31 this month.

Rodriguez met with Yankees owner Hal Steinbrenner last week and the conversation was believed to have gone well, with no talk of the Yankees eating the approximately $28 million remaining on his deal, sources told Wallace Matthews of ESPN.

Despite his struggles, Cashman pointed out that Rodriguez's efforts of preparation and his ability to be a good teammate have been superb this season.

"Say what you want about Alex Rodriguez and the current season he's having," Cashman said. "This guy is coming every day to prepare, bust his tail, do the pregame work, put himself in a position to succeed, wait to be called upon, support his teammates."
