On Thursday, with the losing run on third base in the bottom of the ninth at Busch Stadium, Padres manager Andy Green didn't want right-hander Carlos Villanueva to face Jedd Gyorko, the erstwhile San Diego stalwart who had gone deep four times against his former team over the previous three days.

Instead, Green preferred to have Villanueva walk Gyorko, loading the bases for Aledmys Diaz, the St. Louis Cardinals' rookie shortstop, and setting up a possible double play.

His decision backfired.

Diaz, who took the field at Petco Park in the 87th All-Star Game just over a week ago, deposited a 3-2 fastball from Villanueva in front of Melvin Upton Jr. in left field, lifting the Cardinals to a 6-5 victory and a four-game sweep with his first career walk-off hit.
