The Miami Marlins will place Wei-Yin Chen on the 15-day disabled list with an elbow issue, manager Don Mattingly confirmed Sunday, one day after the 31-year-old left-hander was scratched from Monday's scheduled start against the Philadelphia Phillies.

On Saturday, the Marlins offered no explanation as to why Chen didn't throw his scheduled bullpen session, though MLB.com's Joe Frisaro reported the veteran southpaw is dealing with some sort of discomfort.

Before Mattingly announced that Chen will head to the DL with an unspecified elbow issue, sources had told Frisaro that Jarred Cosart would be promoted from Triple-A New Orleans to start in Chen's stead Monday.

Chen, who landed a five-year, $80-million deal with Miami in January, owns a 4.99 ERA with a 1.30 WHIP through his first 19 starts with the Marlins, allowing at least four earned runs in six of his last eight starts (6.09 ERA).
