Report: Nationals have checked in on Royals' Davis

For a second straight year, Washington Nationals general manager Mike Rizzo is pursuing a closer ahead of the non-waiver trade deadline.

Having already been linked to New York Yankees flamethrower Aroldis Chapman, the Nationals reportedly also checked in on Kansas City Royals closer Wade Davis, according to Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports.

The availability of both Chapman and Davis remains in question as both the Royals and Yankees haven't declared whether or not they'll be sellers at the deadline. Heyman notes that the price tag on Davis is higher than Chapman, due to the fact that he has a $10-million team option for the 2017 season.

Davis has emerged as one of the majors best relievers since his conversion from a starter in 2014. The two-time All-Star owns a 1.14 ERA and 0.98 WHIP across 31 2/3 innings this season to go with 30 strikeouts.

Rizzo traded for closer Jonathan Papelbon at last season's deadline. The right-hander has converted 19 saves this season and owns a 2.64 ERA and 1.14 WHIP in 31 appearances. He's set to become a free agent at the end of the year.
