The San Diego Padres are on the verge of trading Melvin Upton Jr., or so they say.

With 10 days to go until the non-waiver trade deadline, the Padres are reportedly telling teams they're getting close to dealing the 31-year-old outfielder who's owed another $22.5 million through 2017, Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports reports.

Though, as Passan speculates, it may be posturing on San Diego's part, the Padres are widely expected to move some of their more veteran pieces ahead of the Aug. 1 deadline - Andrew Cashner and Jon Jay, among them - and general manager A.J. Preller said last week that Upton has been "opening eyes" with his play.

Traded to the Padres last April, Upton has continued his San Diego resurgence this year, hitting .260/.309/.448 (104 OPS+) with 16 homers - his most since 2012 - and 1.6 WAR through 90 games heading into Friday's contest with the Washington Nationals.
