Report: Giants eyeing relievers Gomez, Jeffress, others

Benny Sieu / USA TODAY Sports

San Francisco Giants general manager Bobby Evans is hoping to upgrade his bullpen heading into the non-waiver trade deadline.

The NL West leaders are reportedly "blanketing" the reliever market, according to Jerry Crasnick of ESPN. They have a top scout monitoring Philadelphia Phillies relievers Jeanmar Gomez and David Hernandez, while they're also scouting Will Smith and Jeremy Jeffress of the Milwaukee Brewers.

Pitcher ERA IP SO WHIP
Smith 2.12 17 15 0.94
Jeffress 2.29 39.1 29 1.32
Gomez 2.82 44.2 29 1.14
Hernandez 4.43 44.2 56 1.46

It was reported last month that the Giants had internal discussions about pursuing New York Yankees left-hander Andrew Miller, though Crasnick notes San Francisco might be outgunned by the Chicago Cubs or Washington Nationals.

Giants closer Santiago Casilla has struggled this season, especially of late. He owns a 9.00 ERA over his last six appearances and has blown five saves in 26 opportunities. Giants relievers enter play Wednesday with MLBs' 16th best ERA.
