Kansas City Royals first baseman Eric Hosmer made the most of his first All-Star appearance Tuesday, hammering a second-inning home run off National League starter Johnny Cueto en route to the game's MVP award.

Hosmer's night was going so swimmingly that Miguel Cabrera asked AL manager Ned Yost not to sub in at first base until after Hosmer got a third at-bat because it could've sealed the MVP honor, Yahoo Sports' Jeff Passan reports.

"He was already one of my favorite guys in the league," Hosmer said of the Detroit Tigers slugger. "When he does something like that - listen, I know he’s the best first baseman in the game. I know he’s the best player in the game. And there was no bitterness as far as not being the starter. For him to do that says a lot about his character and really stands out to me."

Hosmer grounded out during his third at-bat in the game's sixth inning before being replaced by Cabrera, but his first two trips to the plate were enough to earn him the MVP over teammate Salvador Perez, who also homered in the contest. Hosmer finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored.

The spectacular performance from the two Royals elicited strong feelings from Yost.

"I felt like a proud papa there in the second inning after those two guys gave us the lead, and I was really excited," Yost said. "It’s been a long time since I’ve been that proud of two players in a moment like that, and that was really special for me."
