Mets don't expect Cespedes, Syndergaard out for long

Friday night was a scary one for the New York Mets when right-hander Noah Syndergaard and outfielder Yoenis Cespedes both exited a game against the Washington Nationals with injuries.

Despite early concerns about the pair, the Mets don't expect the two superstars to be out of action for very long.

Manager Terry Collins said Syndergaard, who left Friday after showing discomfort in his throwing arm, did not undergo an MRI Saturday, and his issue was merely arm fatigue.

"With the tests they put on him last night and the description he gave to the doctors, they are talking about fatigue more than anything," Collins told reporters. "There was no discomfort, no tightness, no stiffness, no pain, no twinge or anything. His arm just got tired."

Cespedes was forced to leave the contest in the fourth inning with what was later diagnosed as a right quad strain, which he described as sore prior to Saturday's rematch with the Nationals.

"We're going to try and nurse this and see what happens in the next three or four days, and hopefully when we come out of the break, he'll be able to play," Collins said.

With Matt Harvey out for the season with thoracic outlet syndrome, David Wright likely out until 2017 after neck surgery, and a lineup also lacking Lucas Duda and Zack Wheeler, the Mets are presumably relieved with the news.

Syndergaard and Cespedes were replaced in the All-Star game by San Diego Padres left-hander Drew Pomeranz and Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder Starling Marte, respectively.

Syndergaard owns a 2.56 ERA in 17 starts, with a 10.9 strikeout per nine inning rate. Cespedes leads the Mets in home runs (21), RBIs (52) and slugging percentage (.583).
