Marlins acquire Rodney from Padres
The San Diego Padres' sell-off continues.
Eager to add an arm at the back end of their bullpen, the Miami Marlins acquired Padres closer Fernando Rodney on Thursday in exchange for minor-league pitcher Chris Paddack.
The Marlins had been eyeing a late-inning arm in recent weeks and were reportedly considering Rodney and New York Yankees flamethrower Aroldis Chapman.
After a disastrous 2015 campaign, Rodney has revitalized his career with San Diego after inking a one-year deal. The 39-year-old owns a 0.31 ERA and 0.87 WHIP across 28 2/3 innings, striking out 33 while converting 17 saves in 17 opportunities.
The addition of Rodney further bolsters a Marlins bullpen that has been one of the team's strengths this season despite the loss of Carter Capps. Closer A.J. Ramos owns a 1.74 ERA in 28 appearances, while setup man David Phelps has struck out 49 over 42 innings.
With the bullpen addressed, the Marlins are believed to still be searching the market for a starting pitcher. They've been reportedly eyeing Padres lefty Drew Pomeranz and Tampa Bay Rays right-hander Jake Odorizzi.
Paddack is currently pitching for Single-A Greensboro. In six starts, he's 2-0 with a 0.95 ERA, 0.39 WHIP and 48 strikeouts in 28 1/3 innings.
Dealing Rodney is the second major trade for Padres general manager A.J. Preller this month. He dealt James Shields to the Chicago White Sox on June 4.
