Report: Mets would expect Reyes to address domestic matter if signed

The expectation is that when Jose Reyes becomes a free agent at 1 p.m. on Saturday, the New York Mets will snatch him.

If that happens, the New York Post's Mike Puma is reporting the club will require Reyes to publicly address his domestic-violence incident as a prerequisite for signing with the team.

The report goes on to say Reyes is desperate for a return to the team he started his career with, and that he's been unhappy ever since leaving the Big Apple following the 2011 season.

Although any team that signs Reyes would be forced to pay him the league minimum, the Mets are reportedly looking at lacing his contract with non-guaranteed bonuses. He would also have to spend a couple weeks in the minors to acclimate himself to his new role as an infield utility player.

Pending Reyes accepting his newfound role as a semi-regular player, a major league executive says there's no downside to the Mets signing Reyes.

On Thursday, the Colorado Rockies announced the franchise has requested to waive Reyes for the purpose of granting him his unconditional release. Any team that signs him would be on the hook for his $38-million contract.

Reyes recently completed a 51-game suspension for violating MLB's domestic-violence policy after an incident with his wife in Hawaii this past October.
