Panik heads to DL with concussion after pitch to head

The San Francisco Giants announced Wednesday second baseman Joe Panik was placed on the seven-day disabled list with a concussion.

Panik was hit in the head by an errant pitch from Tampa Bay Rays left-hander Matt Moore on June 18.

The 25-year-old Panik was scratched from the lineup Tuesday due to delayed concussion symptoms after initially passing concussion tests on three consecutive days.

"We'll have some more tests to see where we're at," manager Bruce Bochy told reporters Tuesday. "We do have some concern there. He played last night. We wouldn't have played him if he had symptoms. This just came on. He was playing great."

Bochy told Bay Area News Group's Andrew Baggarly that tests showed Panik had a mild concussion, and the skipper hopes his starting second baseman will return in a week.

San Francisco purchased the contract of Ruben Tejada from Triple-A to replace Panik, and slotted him into the lineup Wednesday against the Oakland Athletics.

Panik is hitting .256/.321/.407 with seven home runs, 36 RBIs, and is tied for the NL lead in triples among second basemen with five.
