Hosmer's broken bat nearly impales umpire

MLB.com

It was this close to a scary incident.

In the first inning between the Kansas City Royals and New York Mets, Eric Hosmer got sawed off and his bat blew up into two pieces.

The ball went foul down the first-base line, and as umpire John Hirschbeck made the call, he didn't see the bat still in the air.

The head of the bat then landed two feet away from him, and thankfully no one was hurt.
