Rays place Pearce, Mahtook on disabled list

CLEVELAND (AP) The Tampa Bay Rays have placed Steve Pearce and Mikie Mahtook on the 15-day disabled list after both players were injured in Monday night's 7-4 loss to Cleveland.

Pearce strained his right hamstring running to first base after hitting a fly ball in the ninth inning. Mahtook suffered a broken left hand when he was hit by a Josh Tomlin pitch in the second.

Pearce is hitting .322 with nine homers and 25 RBIs in 51 games. He has played first base, second base and designated hitter.

Mahtook, who has played all three outfield spots, is batting .154 with three RBIs in 24 games.

Tampa Bay has five players on the disabled list, including Steven Souza Jr. (strained left hip), Kevin Kiermaier (broken left hand) and Brandon Guyer (strained left hamstring).

Infielder Nick Franklin and right-hander Ryan Garton were called up from Triple-A Durham.
