Yet another pitcher has thrown his bat into the home run derby.

Miami Marlins ace Jose Fernandez has expressed interest in joining this year's Home Run Derby field in San Diego.

"I want in for sure," Fernandez told Clark Spencer of the Miami Herald. "Oh my God, it would be amazing."

The 23-year-old owns just two career home runs, though his first one was rather notable for the ruckus he caused after flipping his bat. That's a far cry from the likes of the other big-name pitchers who want to take part, including Jake Arrieta and Madison Bumgarner, baseball's active home run leader among pitchers.

Fernandez might not want to go up against the big boys, though, as he's calling for a pitchers-only edition of the contest.

"We should do our own Home Run Derby," he said. "I think it would be very fun for baseball. I think the fans would love to see that."

Major League Baseball reportedly discussed staging a Home Run Derby for pitchers at this year's All-Star festivities in San Diego after Bumgarner sparked the conversation by expressing his desire to take part last week.

Fernandez says he's "ready" for the contest now, and that he "can practice today." Marlins catching coach and batting-practice pitcher Brian Schneider doesn't doubt that one bit - "He definitely has power" - but worries about the young ace hurting himself while swinging for the fences.

"You're swinging, and you're swinging hard," Schneider said. "It would make me a little bit nervous."
