ATLANTA - The San Francisco Giants are bracing for the worst and hoping for the best after placing outfielder Hunter Pence on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday with a strained right hamstring.

Pence missed six starts with another right hamstring injury before returning on Saturday. This time, the more significant injury could keep Pence on the disabled list longer than two weeks.

"Unfortunately, he did a pretty good job on it," said Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. "And it’s a shame."

Pence underwent an MRI exam on Thursday, but the club was still waiting for the club's medical staff to review the results. Bochy told reporters prior to Thursday's first pitch in Atlanta that surgery was not being discussed as a possibility.

The news comes a year to the day that Pence injured his wrist and missed 30 games. San Francisco went 12-18 in his absence. This year, Pence's seven home runs are tied for the team lead, while his 36 RBIs are tied for the fifth-most in the NL.

It's the third significant player in the last week to hit the DL for the first-place Giants, who also lost Angel Pagan and Matt Cain to hamstring injuries.

In a corresponding roster move, the Giants recalled outfielder Mac Williamson from Triple-A Sacramento.
