Texas head coach Augie Garrido is stepping off the diamond after 48 years.

Garrido is college baseball's all-time wins leader with 1,975, and spent 20 years at Texas. He accepted a position as special assistant to the athletic director, the school announced Monday.

"I owe everyone at the University of Texas a million heartfelt thank-yous," Garrido said. "I came here to serve and I am so proud to be able to continue to serve The University in my new role as special assistant to Mike Perrin."

Garrido is the first baseball coach to lead two different schools to a national championship, accomplishing the feat at Cal State Fullerton and Texas. He's also guided teams to a national title in four separate decades, and is one of three coaches in history to win five or more NCAA championships.

"We both care deeply for the University of Texas and our baseball program," Perrin said. "I am beyond appreciative of all that Augie has done for Texas baseball and want to celebrate those successes.

"I'm happy he'll be continuing to work with me as a special assistant and looking forward to working with him in that role."

Over his college coaching career, Garrido made it to the College World Series 15 times, including 33 NCAA Regional appearances, while earning six National Coach of the Year awards.
