Yankees prospect Gary Sanchez breaks thumb
The New York Yankees won't be able to turn to top catching prospect Gary Sanchez if they need him at any point in the near future.
Sanchez has a non-displaced fracture in his right thumb after a foul tip on Tuesday.
He'll go on the Triple-A disabled list and be reevaluated with a new X-ray in about two weeks.
“It is (a blow to the lineup)," Triple-A manager Al Pedrique told Shane Hennigan of the Scranton Times-Tribune. "For Sanchez, he’s getting so much better with his game overall defensively and offensively. He was the third hitter in the lineup. He was showing that he can hit on a consistent basis. He was getting big hits for us with guys in scoring position. And defensively, he was doing everything well - calling the game well, communicating with the pitching staff well and stopping the running game, which is huge."
Sanchez, who is listed as the No. 3 prospect in the Yankees' system by MLB Pipeline, was hitting .290/.333/.529 for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre before the injury occurred. He made his season debut with the Yankees on May 13, going 0-for-4.
The Yankees are currently relying on a catching combination of Brian McCann and Austin Romine, who are hitting a combined .262 with six home runs and 22 RBIs.
