When Jake Arrieta takes the mound, the Chicago Cubs can't seem to lose.

The Cubs extended their regular-season winning streak when Arrieta starts to 23 games Wednesday by defeating the St. Louis Cardinals 9-8.

With the victory, Chicago tied a major-league record set by the Atlanta Braves behind right-hander Kris Medlen, according to MLB.com's Jenifer Langosch and Carrie Muskat.

Arrieta's four earned runs against the Cardinals Wednesday were the most he's allowed during the remarkable stretch, which dates back to July 30, 2015.

The 30-year-old right-hander stayed perfect on the year with the victory, which marked his ninth win of the season. He's now tied with Chris Sale for the major-league lead.

Last season's NL Cy Young winner also owns a 1.72 ERA during the campaign, which follows his 1.77 ERA from 2015.
