Angels' Cliff Pennington: Setting out on rehab assignment Wednesday

Pennington (hamstring) will begin his rehab assignment Wednesday at High-A Inland Empire.

Analysis:

The utility infielder has been on the shelf since May 13 due to a hamstring issue, but he has progressed quickly since landing on the DL and is nearing a return. He's expected to be activated off the DL on Saturday, so he'll play at least one game at High-A before being returning to the Angels. Gregorio Petit and Johnny Giavotella have both been on tears of late, so Pennington could potentially be relegated to a bench role once he rejoins the big league club.
