The San Francisco Giants have placed starter Matt Cain on the 15-day disabled list with a right hamstring strain.

The club also recalled Chris Stratton from Triple-A Sacramento in a corresponding roster move.

Cain injured his hamstring during the second inning of Friday's 5-2 loss to the Colorado Rockies, and was forced to leave after facing just six batters and throwing 26 pitches.

"It's discouraging, but I can't sit here and dwell on it," Cain said postgame, according to the San Francisco Chronicle's John Shea. "We'll try to get this thing right and get back out there."

The 31-year-old starter was beginning to reverse a lackluster start to the campaign that saw his ERA balloon to 7.84 after six contests. Since then, Cain has dropped the mark to a slightly better 5.20 ERA. Skipper Bruce Bochy lamented the unfortunate timing of the injury.

"It's a shame because he had his good stuff," Bochy said, according to Shea. "That's a tough break for him, particularly with the way he's been throwing the ball, if he has to miss a start or two. It’s a little setback."

Stratton, Cain's temporary replacement, is 5-4 with a 6.02 ERA after nine starts this season with the Sacramento River Cats.
