Shelby Miller's first season in the desert continues to unravel.

The Arizona Diamondbacks officially placed the struggling right-hander on the 15-day disabled list with a sprained right finger Friday.

Miller initially sustained the injury to his right pointer finger during an April start when his hand scraped the mound on his follow-through. Following Thursday's game, manager Chip Hale hinted that the finger was still bothering him.

"I think his finger is still not where we'd like it to be after hitting it on the ground in San Diego," Hale said following Miller's latest rough outing on Thursday, according to Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic. "He's still having some residual effects of that with feel. He's been good to pitch. He's pitched through it. But we've got to make 100 percent sure that thing is not affecting his performance."

Miller was supposed to join Zack Greinke as part of a potent front end to Arizona's rotation, but instead has struggled immensely since being acquired from the Atlanta Braves in a shocking offseason trade. Thursday's start, in which he gave up six runs on eight hits in Pittsburgh, sent his ERA to a stunning 7.09 over 45 2/3 innings this year. The 25-year-old has only made it through six innings in two of his 10 starts.

In addition to Miller, the Diamondbacks also placed starter Rubby De La Rosa on the DL with right elbow inflammation, while right-hander Josh Collmenter was activated from his DL stint.
