Sprinkler malfunction halts longest game of season

MLB.com

Well, now we know what time Petco Park's automatic sprinklers are set to go off.

With the San Diego Padres and Los Angeles Dodgers locked in the 17th inning of their marathon Sunday contest - the longest game of the season in both time and innings - play was briefly halted when the sprinklers started in right field.

Apparently no one in San Diego expected the game to go on for over five hours, which is understandable: Sunday marked the first time since 2013 that a Padres home game went at least 15 innings. At 5 hours, 47 minutes, it also secured a place as the fifth-longest game by time in franchise history.

Alas, they were not rally sprinklers for the home side on this day. Right after the sprinklers were turned off, emergency Dodgers reliever Ross Stripling induced a groundout from Wil Myers to secure a 9-5 Los Angeles victory.
