Cubs' Epstein: We're not 'completely locked in yet'

Theo Epstein will tell you a great start to the season is just that - a start.

After 26 games, the $290 million the Chicago Cubs spent this winter to bolster the team is paying off. Chicago looks great on paper, and even better on the field, leading the majors in runs scored, fewest allowed, walks, and team ERA.

But although Epstein is thrilled with the early result, he says it won't stop him from making his baseball-rich team even richer.

“I think we’ve played really well, and we’re happy with the record that we have,” the Cubs president told Gordon Wittenmyer of the Chicago Sun-Times. “But I don’t think we’ve completely locked in yet, or clicked in all facets of the game.”

The only conceivable question mark would be left field, which hosts a shaky Jorge Soler. Behind the dish, David Ross is a catcher every pitcher loves to throw to. The scariest part about all this is, the Cubs are finding so much success without Kyle Schwarber, who suffered a torn LCL and ACL early in the season.

“Our pitching staff’s really been carrying us, been the most consistent part of our team,” Epstein said. “As it warms up here, I think the bats will get going, and they’ll probably carry us for a while.

“But as far as needs that we might have or ways that we can get better, we’re always assessing that, and there’s lots of different ways that we could potentially improve the club before the end of the season.”
