The banged-up New York Yankees may have narrowly averted disaster Wednesday in a 7-0 win over the Baltimore Orioles.

Left fielder Brett Gardner was hit on the elbow by a Dylan Bundy pitch in the eighth inning and walked to first base in noticeable pain. He was replaced by Dustin Ackley to start the ninth.

After the game, manager Joe Girardi told reporters he's concerned, despite X-rays on Gardner's elbow coming back negative. His status for the next few days is in doubt as Girardi said the pitch left Gardner "pretty sore."

"I'll probably have a better idea once I wake up tomorrow, see how I feel," Gardner told reporters when asked how his elbow felt. "Sometimes it can be worse the second day, swell up a little bit. I'm sure we'll put a tight wrap on there tonight, hopefully try to keep it elevated while I sleep, and it feels better tomorrow."

New York is already without designated hitter Alex Rodriguez after he was placed on the disabled list Wednesday with a hamstring strain.
