The Boston Red Sox have announced third baseman Pablo Sandoval will miss the remainder of the 2016 season after undergoing shoulder surgery.

The "complicated" rotator cuff cleanup and repair of a labrum tear reportedly ends an underlying headache for Boston and a strange campaign for Sandoval.

After shining with the San Francisco Giants, his wallet wasn't the only thing that got thicker after signing a five-year, $90-million deal with Boston last winter. Sandoval packed on the pounds, seeing his average dip to .245 last season with 10 home runs.

This year, he was even worse. After losing his starting job to Travis Shaw, Sandoval went hitless in six at-bats this season and struck out four times. However, that may have been the least of his concerns amid an otherwise bizarre series of events.

Sandoval reported to spring training out of shape, and was relegated to a below-average bench player. In his only start of the season, his belt came undone on a swing April 9 in Toronto.

A few days later, Sandoval was placed on the disabled list after complaining of shoulder problems, though it's unclear how or when he injured himself.

When he hit the DL, manager John Farrell said Sandoval was also being placed on a conditioning program.
