C Smith scratched before White Sox debut, placed on DL
TORONTO (AP) Chicago White Sox catcher Kevan Smith thought he'd be making his major league debut in Toronto. Instead, he made his debut trip to the disabled list.
Called up Sunday after Alex Avila landed on the 15-day DL with a sore right hamstring, Smith was in the lineup for Monday's game against the Blue Jays but was scratched after injuring his back while stretching before batting practice.
Unwilling to play with just one healthy catcher, Dioner Navarro, the White Sox put Smith on the 15-day DL Tuesday, retroactive to Sunday, and selected Hector Sanchez from Triple-A Charlotte.
The move was no doubt a disappointment to Smith and members of his family who'd traveled to Toronto to watch him play.
Smith hit .345 with two homers and six RBIs in eight games at Charlotte. Sanchez was batting .143 with two homers and three RBIs in eight games at Triple-A.
