The Blue Jays jumped out to a 1-0 series lead with a 10-1 win in yesterday's Game 1, breaking the game open with a five-run third inning that was capped off by a bases-loaded triple by Troy Tulowitzki. Toronto had 19 innings of at least five runs during the regular season, tied for second most in the AL (Boston -- 25).

The Rangers have a 1-2 series record when they fall behind 1-0 in a best-of-five series (swept by the Yankees in both the 1998 ALDS and 1999 ALDS, and won the 2011 ALDS versus the Rays in four games). In the 2011 ALDS, the Rangers lost Game 1 by nine runs and then won three straight games.

This is the first time the Blue Jays have ever won the opener of a best-of-five series, and they are 2-1 all time when winning a postseason series opener (lost the 1985 ALCS versus Kansas City in seven games, and won the 1993 ALCS versus Chicago and 1993 World Series versus Philadelphia in six games each).

Melvin Upton, Jr. hit a solo home run in Game 1, his eighth career postseason home run but his first in 20 playoff games. Upton has averaged 13.63 at-bats per home run over his postseason career, good for the fourth fewest among active players (minimum 75 plate appearances). Jose Bautista added a three-run homer in the ninth inning, his third straight playoff game with a home run (the first Blue Jay all-time to hit a home run in three consecutive playoff games).

J.A. Happ will be making his second career postseason start; his first came in the 2009 NLDS versus the Rockies, where he allowed three runs (all earned) in 3.0 innings pitched. In eight career postseason appearances, Happ has a 4.82 ERA. This season, Happ won a career-high 20 games, recording the win in his only start against the Rangers this year (allowed one run in 7.0 innings in Toronto on May 5, a 12-2 Blue Jays win).

Yu Darvish allowed three runs (two earned) in 6.2 innings pitched and took the loss versus the Orioles in the 2012 Wild Card game, his only career postseason start. Darvish has not faced the Blue Jays since 2014, but in seven career starts against them he is 3-2 with a 2.45 ERA, posting six quality starts in the process. In his career, Darvish has pitched more innings against Toronto than any other non-AL West team.

Including Game 1, the Rangers' run differential for the season is now at -1 (766-767). In the Wild Card era, no team has won the World Series with a cumulative run differential of less than +39, which was done by the 2006 St. Louis Cardinals. Meanwhile, the Blue Jays' differential for the year has climbed to +105 (774-669), second only to the Red Sox in the AL (+183).

Darvish missed the entire 2015 season while he was recovering from Tommy John surgery. Now Darvish is all the way back and hoping to help the Rangers win their first World Series title.
