The Blue Jays defeated the Orioles, 5-2, in the AL wild-card game on an Edwin Encarnacion walkoff home run in the 11th inning on Tuesday night, advancing to the ALDS to play the Rangers for the second straight season. Encarnacion is the second Toronto player all-time with a postseason walkoff homer (Joe Carter in 1993 WS).

Texas won the AL West for the second straight season this year, making the playoffs for the fifth time in the last seven campaigns (since 2010). This is the first season in Rangers' history that they've had the AL's best record, and thus, home-field advantage throughout the postseason (AL won 2016 ASG).

Toronto won four of the seven meetings between these clubs during the 2016 regular season, with all three of the Rangers' wins coming by a single run. The Jays beat the Rangers in the 2015 ALDS after losing the first two games at home, becoming the third team to do so in a Divisional Series all-time (also 2001 Yankees and 2012 Giants).

Marco Estrada, who went 1-0 with a 0.95 ERA in his last three starts of the 2016 regular season, gets the nod to start Game 1 of the ALDS for the Blue Jays. Including a victory over Texas in Game 3 of the 2015 ALDS, Estrada went 2-1 with a 2.33 ERA in three postseason starts last year.

Cole Hamels went 1-0 with a 1.93 ERA in his last two starts of the 2016 regular season, going 7.0 innings and recording a quality start in each of those outings. Hamels (0-1, 2.70 ERA in two starts versus Toronto in last year's ALDS) has seven career postseason wins -- third-most among all active pitchers since 2007.

The Rangers outscored their opponents 765-757 overall in 2016, recording the lowest single-season run differential (+8) of any 95+ win team in MLB history. Toronto's run differential (+93) was the fifth best of any team in the majors this year.

The Blue Jays had an MLB-high tying six players with 20+ home runs during the 2016 regular season. Toronto out-homered Texas 8-3 in last year's ALDS.

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP)  Jose Bautista hit another long, punctuating home run for the Toronto Blue Jays in the playoffs against the Texas Rangers.
This time, Bautista dropped his bat softly near home plate and rounded the bases after a 425-foot, three-run blast in the ninth inning of the Blue Jays' 10-1 romp Thursday in Game 1 of the AL Division Series.
