The Indians beat the Red Sox, 5-4, in Game 1 to take a 1-0 series lead. There were six solo home runs hit in the game (three by each team), just the third time in postseason history that two teams combined for at least six solo home runs in a game (the Rays and Red Sox combined for six in Game 2 of the 2008 ALCS and the Mets and Cardinals combined for six in Game 4 of the 2006 NLCS).

The Red Sox have never won Game 2 in a best-of-five series after losing Game 1, but have won the series twice when falling behind 1-0 in a best-of-five series (2-3 series record all-time; beat the Athletics in the 2003 ALDS and the Indians in the 2009 ALDS). Boston was swept in its last two best-of-five series in which it lost Game 1, losing to the Angels in the 2009 ALDS and the White Sox in the 2005 ALDS.

Cleveland's pitching staff struck out 14 Boston batters in Game 1, the most pitching strikeouts by the Indians in a single playoff game since striking out 23 in Game 4 of the 1996 NLDS versus Baltimore.

Andrew Benintendi put the Red Sox up, 2-1, with a solo home run in the top of the third inning in Game 1, his first career postseason plate appearance. Benintendi is the first Red Sox player to hit a home run in his first career postseason plate appearance since Kevin Cash did so in Game 4 of the 2008 ALCS versus Tampa Bay.

Over his postseason career, David Price is 0-7 with a 5.27 ERA as a starter. The only other pitcher all-time to lose seven consecutive postseason decisions as a starter is Randy Johnson (spanning the 1995 and 2001 postseasons), but Price is the only pitcher all-time to lose each of his first seven career postseason decisions as a starter.

Corey Kluber will be making his postseason debut in Game 2. He is 2-3 with a 4.78 ERA versus Boston over his career, his second-highest career ERA versus any AL team (Toronto -- 5.34). 2016 was Kluber's third straight season with at least 200 strikeouts (227), making him the first Indians pitcher to strike out at least 200 batters in three consecutive seasons since Gaylord Perry (1972-74).

CLEVELAND -- With the Indians' top setup man and closer extended to the limit in the opener of the American League Division Series, Cleveland goes into Game 2 against the Boston Red Sox on Friday afternoon at a bit of a disadvantage.
Thanks in large part to two scoreless midgame innings from Andrew Miller and 1 2/3 scoreless innings from Cody Allen for the save, the Indians emerged with a 5-4 in Game 1 on Thursday.
