The Red Sox lost five of their last six games of the 2016 regular season, scoring five or fewer runs in each of those contests. Boston, which finished in the AL East cellar each of the previous two campaigns, are in the playoffs for just the second time in the last seven seasons (also 2013).

Cleveland swept three from Kansas City at Kauffman Stadium to complete its 2016 regular-season schedule, finishing with its best record since going 96-66 in 2007 (also the last time the Tribe won the AL Central). The Indians went 53-28 at Progressive Field this year -- tied for the second-best home mark in MLB.

The Red Sox went 4-2 versus the Indians during the 2016 regular season, holding Cleveland to two runs or fewer in each of those victories. This is the fifth time that these two franchises will be meeting in the playoffs (Cleveland won ALDS in both 1995 and 1998, Boston won the ALDS in 1999 and ALCS in 2007).

Rick Porcello won an MLB-high 22 games in 2016, including winning his only start against the Indians on May 22 (5.2 IP, 2 ER). Porcello (who is 5-1 with a 1.69 ERA in his last six outings versus Cleveland) has started two career postseason games (both with Detroit in 2011), going 0-1 with a 4.26 ERA in those contests.

Trevor Bauer, who began the 2016 campaign as a reliever (first six games), will be making his first career postseason appearance tonight. Bauer is 0-2 with a 12.15 ERA in two career starts against Boston.

Including Bauer (12), Cleveland had five different starters with 10+ wins during the 2016 regular season -- tied with the Cubs for most in MLB. The Indians' five pitchers with double-digit wins tied a franchise single-season record, last accomplished in 1961.

Boston had an MLB-high tying three players with 30 or more home runs in 2016 (also Baltimore and Seattle). The Sox have had three players hit 30+ bombs in a single season just one other time in franchise history -- 1977 (Carlton Fisk, George Scott and Butch Hobson).

On April 5, they played at Progressive Field on Opening Day and six months later, with both teams having won their respective divisions, they will meet in Game 1 in the American League Division Series.

Porcello, Bauer square off when Indians host Red Sox

CLEVELAND (AP)  Boom! Bang! Pow! Nine pitches, three homers, one devastating inning.
Back in October's spotlight, the Cleveland Indians rocked Rick Porcello for three long balls in the third inning in their AL Division Series opener. Francisco Lindor's homer capped the rampage off the 22-game winner, and the Indians held on to beat the Boston Red Sox 5-4 Thursday night.
