The Marlins are 3-3 on the road versus the Nationals this season, and are looking to finish with a winning road record versus Washington for the first time since 2011 (7-2). From 2012-15, Miami went 10-28 at Washington.

The Marlins lost their home series versus the Mets earlier this week, dropping the final two games of the three-game series. Miami was outscored 17-3 over the final two games of the series, and was out-hit 29-13 over those two games; the 29 hits allowed by the Marlins over the final two games are tied for the most hits allowed by Miami over a two-game span this season (also June 29 at Detroit and June 30 at Atlanta).

The Nationals split their four-game home series versus the Diamondbacks earlier this week. Washington hit two home runs in the final game of the series (a win) and is now 23-5 at home when it hits multiple home runs. The Nationals' 60 multi-home run games this season are by far the most in franchise history (last season ranks second with 53).

Christian Yelich went 1-for-3 on Wednesday to give him 166 hits on the season, a new single-season career high. Yelich, who won't turn 25 until December 5, has totaled 543 career hits, fourth most by a Marlin prior to turning 25 years old; only Miguel Cabrera (842), Giancarlo Stanton (619) and Hanley Ramirez (574) totaled more hits before turning 25.

Since making his first start as a Marlin on July 31, Andrew Cashner's 5.73 ERA is the fifth highest in the NL and his .293 opponent batting average is fourth highest (minimum 10 starts).

A.J. Cole allowed a .341 opponent batting average last season, but has held hitters to a .231 batting average this season. However, his opponent batting average is creeping back up, as he held hitters to a .191 batting average in August and a .253 batting average in September.

The series opener comes a day after a memorial service in Florida for Jose Fernandez, the ace of the Marlins who died in a boating accident Sunday.

WASHINGTON (AP)  Bryce Harper returned to the lineup, but neither his bat nor spot starter A.J. Cole helped the Washington Nationals in their pursuit of home-field advantage opening the playoffs.
Christian Yelich homered and Dee Gordon's infield single in the sixth inning scored the go-ahead run as the Miami Marlins beat the NL East champion Nationals 6-4 on Friday night.
