The Reds beat the Brewers, 4-2, on Sunday, taking the last two games of the weekend series, and improving to 5-4 in their last nine road contests. With the victory, Cincinnati has now topped its win total from last season (65 wins in 2016, 64 wins in 2015).

St. Louis lost, 3-1, to the Cubs last night, dropping two of three over the weekend at Wrigley Field, and finishing up a 10-game road trip with a mark of 5-5. Following this four-game matchup, the Cards will end the regular season with three vs. the Pirates at Busch Stadium.

The Cardinals are 8-7 vs. the Reds this season, outscoring Cincinnati by just one run (77-76) in those 15 contests. Including a 4-2 mark this season, St. Louis is 24-9 (.727) vs. Cincinnati at Busch Stadium since the beginning of 2013 -- the best home record of any NL team vs. any divisional opponent during that span.

Tim Adleman allowed two runs (both earned) in 6.1 IP a week ago vs. the Cubs in Chicago, garnering a no-decision, and increasing his winless streak to six consecutive starts. Including a loss to the Cardinals (September 4), Adleman is 0-3 with a 4.86 ERA in those six outings (2-1, 2.96 ERA in first five career starts).

Jaime Garcia, who has been relegated to bullpen duties since his last start on September 13 vs. the Cubs, is 0-4 with a 6.99 ERA in his last seven appearances (two in relief). Garcia is 8-1 with a 2.31 ERA in 11 career home starts against the Reds.

Yadier Molina had two of the Cards' five base knocks last night, including his 35th double of the season -- most among all MLB catchers. Molina is batting .368 (7-for-19) with two home runs and three RBI (zero doubles) during his current five-game hitting streak vs. the Reds.

ST. LOUIS -- A 15-2 rout at the hands of the Cincinnati Reds on Monday represented more than a loss for the St. Louis Cardinals.
It took away the Cardinals' ability to win their way to the playoffs without requiring help from others, putting them into a more precarious spot for the regular season's final six days.

ST. LOUIS (AP)  Aledmys Diaz made a vow Monday to the family of childhood friend Jose Fernandez, the late Miami Marlins ace who died in a boating accident early Sunday.
''I told them that every single time I put on the uniform, I would be thinking of him,'' Diaz said. ''And that I would give 100 percent because that's how he played the game.''
