The Mariners beat the Twins, 4-3, yesterday, taking two of three over the weekend at Target Field, and improving to 12-5 (.706) in their last 17 games -- second best in the majors since September 7 (Red Sox -- 15-3). Seattle has played in an MLB-high 56 one-run games this year (28-28 record).

The Astros defeated the Angels, 4-1, at Minute Maid Park on Sunday, snapping their three-game losing streak in the process. Houston has lost each of its first three home series this month.

The Astros have taken each of the last three series with the M's, posting a 7-2 overall record in those matchups. Houston is riding a four-game home win streak vs. Seattle, outscoring the Mariners 21-12 in those victories.

Hisashi Iwakuma allowed a season-high six runs (five earned) in just 3.1 IP six days ago vs. the Blue Jays, taking the loss, and snapping his personal two-game win streak. Iwakuma is 3-3 with a 3.51 ERA in seven career road outings against the Astros.

Collin McHugh went 5.2 innings and allowed two runs (both earned) last Wednesday in Oakland, beating the A's, and improving to 5-0 with a 3.00 ERA in his last six starts. McHugh has defeated the Mariners four straight times, and in eight of his last nine starts overall (since September 9, 2014).

Evan Gattis crushed his 31st home run of the season on Sunday, giving him 12 bombs in his last 28 games -- one shy of the most in MLB since August 24. Houston is 21-8 when Gattis goes deep at least one time this season.

HOUSTON -- With one more loss on what initially appeared to be a fortuitously scheduled and perfectly timed homestand, the Astros inched closer to elimination from the postseason and the realization of a golden opportunity squandered.
With their 4-3, extra-inning setback, the Astros (82-75) dropped to 1-4 on their seven-game homestand against the Angels and Mariners (83-73), who moved 1 1/2 games ahead of the Astros in the American League wild-card race and two games behind the idle Orioles (85-71) for the second available slot. Houston capped a 5-1 road trip through Seattle and Oakland before returning home with high hopes.
