The Yankees fell to the Rays, 2-0, in St. Petersburg on Thursday. It was the 11th time they've been shutout this year, tied for the most in the AL with Detroit and Kansas City. With the loss, the Yankees fall 3.0 games out of the second AL wild card spot.

The Blue Jays lost to the Mariners, 2-1, in 12 innings in Seattle on Wednesday, but still took two of three in their trip to Seattle. They hold a 1.0-game lead over Detroit for the top wild card spot in the AL, as they enter their final homestand. After four games against the Yankees, the Orioles come to Toronto for three games.

Toronto holds a slight edge in the season series, winning nine games to New York's six, and outscoring the Yankees 67-46. However, the Blue Jays have dominated at home, winning five of six against the Yankees, and allowed more than two runs just once.

Bryan Mitchell allowed four runs (three earned) in 4.2 innings on Saturday against the Red Sox, taking a no-decision. Mitchell will be making just his fourth start of the year, but in his season debut he threw five scoreless innings against the Blue Jays on September 7.

Francisco Liriano allowed four runs (two earned) in 6.0 innings against the Angels on Saturday, taking his 13th loss of the season. Liriano has just one win since joining the Blue Jays on August 1. In six starts and two relief appearances, he's gone 1-2 with a 3.89 ERA.

Edwin Encarnacion appears set to post a number of new career-highs this year. He already has scored 95 runs and has 123 RBI, both career-highs, and he needs just two hits and one home run to set new highs in those categories, as well.

TORONTO (AP)  Yankees slugger Mark Teixeira had a night to remember in his final road game before retirement.
Teixeira hit a tying homer in the ninth inning, adding an uncharacteristic bat flip, and Aaron Hicks added a game-winning blast as the New York Yankees avoided a four-game sweep, beating the Toronto Blue Jays 7-5 on Monday night in a testy game that saw two benches-clearing incidents.
