The Royals swept the Tigers when they last faced them in Detroit (a three-game series from August 15-17), outscoring Detroit, 13-3, over the three games. The three runs allowed by Kansas City in that series are its fewest ever allowed in a three-game series versus the Tigers.

The Royals were swept in their three-game series at Cleveland earlier this week, the second time they've been swept in their last three series played. Kansas City has been swept eight times this season after being swept just six times last season.

The Tigers won both games of their double-header at Minnesota on Thursday, extending their win streak to four games. During its current four-game win streak, Detroit has scored three times as many runs as its opponents (30-10).

Alcides Escobar hit his seventh home run of the season on Thursday. Over the previous two seasons combined, Escobar totaled six home runs.

Danny Duffy is 12-2 (.857) since joining the starting rotation on May 15, the second-highest win percentage by any pitcher with at least 10 decisions over that span (Aaron Sanchez, Tor: 10-1, .909).

Michael Fulmer matched a single-game career high (also August 19 versus Boston) by allowing six runs in his last start at Cleveland last Friday. Fulmer has posted a 4.00 ERA in 11 starts since the All-Star break after recording a 2.11 ERA in 13 starts prior to the break.

DETROIT -- While the Detroit Tigers continue their playoff push, the defending World Series champion Kansas City Royals find themselves battling to finish above .500.
Kansas City reminded Detroit and everybody else on Saturday that the Royals are, after all, the defending World Series champions. They scored five times in the ninth inning to turn a 4-2 deficit into a 7-4 win that brought them back above break-even at 78-77.

DETROIT (AP)  The Kansas City Royals began the game by hitting for the cycle as a team, then Whit Merrifield nearly did it by himself.
Merrifield hit a triple as part of Kansas City's four-run first inning, and he later added a single and a double in a 12-9 victory over the Detroit Tigers on Sunday. The Royals hit four homers to drop the Tigers in the AL wild-card race - and avoided elimination themselves.
