The Red Sox beat the Orioles, 5-3, in Baltimore on Thursday, completing a four-game sweep. Boston has now won eight in a row, and in doing so has opened up a 5.5-game lead in the AL East. Its magic number to clinch the division sits at five.

The Rays beat the Yankees, 2-0, at home on Thursday, avoiding a three-game sweep. The Rays are assured of finishing in last place in the division, the first time they'll do so since 2007, when they were still known as the Devil Rays.

The Red Sox hold the edge in the season series, 9-7, but the Rays are 4-3 at home against Boston. They're the only AL East team with a winning record at home against the Red Sox.

Drew Pomeranz allowed four runs (all earned) in 3.2 innings against the Yankees on Sunday, taking a no-decision. In his last two starts, he has allowed a combined nine runs in just 5.2 innings. In two starts against the Rays this year, Pomeranz is 0-1 with a 3.55 ERA.

Chris Archer allowed three runs (all earned) in 6.1 innings to the Orioles last Friday, taking a no-decision. It was the 10th start in his last 11 that Archer has allowed three or fewer earned runs. Archer has struggled in his four starts against Boston this season, going 0-4 with a 6.65 ERA.

As David Ortiz heads into his final series at Tropicana, he already knows he'll leave as the all-time home run leader as a visiting player. His 34 home runs in are more than anyone else, with Alex Rodriguez in second with 30, and long-time Red Sox teammate Manny Ramirez in third with 25.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- The Boston Red Sox have won nine straight, their longest win streak in more than five years, and as they look to extend that stretch Saturday against the Tampa Bay Rays, their bullpen has been an underappreciated part of their success.
Friday was an excellent example, as closer Craig Kimbrel and reliver Koji Uehara got the night off for rest and the bullpen still came through with four scoreless innings to make a two-run home run in the first hold up for a 2-1 victory.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP)  With the complicated math of baseball in the wild-card era, players in the Boston clubhouse were unaware the Red Sox are playoff bound.
Dustin Pedroia hit his fourth career grand slam to help Rick Porcello get his major league-leading 22nd win, and the Red Sox clinched a playoff berth by beating the Tampa Bay Rays 6-4 Saturday night for their 10th consecutive win.
