The Cardinals were crushed by the Rockies, 11-1, in Denver on Wednesday, the third time this season that St. Louis has lost by at least ten runs. One of the other two came against the Cubs on August 12, during the Cardinals' last visit to Wrigley Field.

The Cubs beat the Reds, 9-2, at Wrigley on Wednesday, completing a sweep of Cincinnati. In the three-game set, Chicago outscored the Reds 20-5. With the NL Central already clinched, the Cubs' magic number for clinching the best record in the NL sits at 2.

The teams have split the season series so far, 8-8, despite the Cubs outscoring St. Louis 79-59. With the Cardinals still in contention for a wild card spot, these teams could see a reversal of roles from last year's NLDS, with the Cubs looking likely to reach the 100-win plateau, just as the Cardinals did last season.

Mike Leake allowed two runs (both earned) in 6.0 innings against the Giants on Saturday, taking a no-decision. It was his sixth-straight start allowing three or fewer earned runs, with five of those registering as quality starts. Leake has allowed exactly three earned runs in each of his three starts against Chicago this year, going 0-2 with a 4.26 ERA.

Jake Arrieta allowed four runs (three earned) in 6.0 innings against Milwaukee on Saturday, picking up his seventh loss of the season. The defending NL Cy Young winner hasn't been at his absolute best against the Cardinals this season, although he is 2-1 with a 3.45 ERA in three starts against them this season.

Kris Bryant has played 147 games this season, four shy of his 151 from last year, and he has the same number of RBI -- 99. However, his numbers are up across the board everywhere else. He has 16 more hits, 30 more runs, 12 more home runs, and is hitting .295, compared to .275 last year.

Hammel (15-9, 3.56 ERA) brings the second-best home ERA in baseball (1.84) into Saturday's middle game against the St. Louis Cardinals. He's also 10-1 in 14 home starts.

Cubs' Hammel takes on Cards at Wrigley

CHICAGO (AP)  The St. Louis Cardinals have a lot to accomplish if they want to return to Chicago in two weeks for a rematch of last year's NL Division Series. They would have to qualify for one of the wild-card spots, then win the single-elimination playoff game.
If they do, the Cardinals may be the one club that won't be fazed by Wrigley Field and the Cubs.
