The A's beat the Cardinals, 7-4, in St. Louis on Sunday, taking two of three over the weekend, and improving to 4-1 in their last five games. Oakland has tallied seven or more runs 24 times this season -- tied with the Royals for fewest in the AL.

Houston lost, 10-4, to Tampa Bay yesterday, snapping its three-game winning streak in the process. The Astros have allowed 10+ runs four times in the last 29 games (did so just four times in their first 101 games of the season).

The Astros have won seven of thirteen meetings with the A's this season, including posting a 5-2 mark at Minute Maid Park. Dating to May 19, 2015, Houston is 9-3 vs. Oakland at home overall.

Sean Manaea went 7.0 innings and allowed just one run (earned) last Tuesday against the Indians, earning the victory, and improving to 2-1 with a 4.26 ERA in his last three starts. Manaea is 0-1 with a 5.68 ERA in two career outings vs. the Rangers at Globe Life Park.

Joe Musgrove allowed five runs (all earned) in 4.0 IP last Tuesday in Pittsburgh, taking the loss, and dropping to 0-2 with a 12.54 ERA in his last two starts. Musgrove's first career MLB start came against the Rangers 22 days ago on August 7 (7.0 IP, 1 ER in a no-decision).

Khris Davis went 1-for-3 with a homer and two RBI yesterday, and enters tonight batting .328 with seven bombs and 15 RBI in his last 16 contests. Davis has gone deep seven times against the Rangers this season -- most of any player in baseball.

HOUSTON -- With right-hander Collin McHugh producing six scoreless innings on the heels of the scoreless start delivered by rookie right-hander Joe Musgrove the evening before, the Astros might be on the brink of creating the momentum with their starting pitching that they'll need entering a rigorous stretch of their schedule.
After completing their three-game series with Oakland on Wednesday, the Astros (70-62) will contest a make-or-break run of 13 games against first-place teams in Texas (away and home), Cleveland (away), and the Chicago Cubs (home). And while the Astros will need help from their inconsistent offense and exceptional bullpen, their rotation will set the pace over the next couple of weeks.

''We had it all mapped out that way,'' Hinch said. ''We were going to get multiple triples and a wild pitch strikeout. Exactly how we drew it up for the sweep.''
