The Cubs beat the Padres, 6-3, on Wednesday to complete a three-game sweep in San Diego. Chicago continues to be the hottest team in the league, posting an MLB-best 18-4 record in the month of August.

The Dodgers lost to the Giants, 4-0, on Thursday in Los Angeles, missing out on a sweep. Matt Moore threw 8.2 innings without allowing a hit before Corey Seager broke up the no-hitter. Despite the loss, the Dodgers still hold a two-game lead over San Francisco in the NL West.

The Cubs took three of four at Wrigley Field against the Dodgers earlier in the season. Since 2014, the teams have each won nine games against each other. In the Cubs' trip to Los Angeles last season, Jake Arrieta threw a no-hitter on August 30, 2015. Arrieta is not scheduled to start this series.

Mike Montgomery allowed one run on one hit in 4.1 innings against the Rockies on Saturday in his first start as a Cub, striking out five as well. This will be Montgomery's first appearance against the Dodgers. In six career games against the NL West, he's 1-1 with a 3.14 ERA.

Bud Norris threw 0.2 innings of relief in Cincinnati on Monday, after starting on Friday. In his start, he only lasted 3.2 innings, allowing six runs (all earned) and taking the loss. His last home start came on July 31, when he left the game after 0.1 innings following a back strain that landed him on the 15-day DL.

Kris Bryant has homered in four of his last seven games, and the Cubs won all four of those. The Cubs are now 24-5 when Bryant hits a home run, which is the best team record among all players with at least 20 homers.
