The Royals beat the Marlins, 5-2, on Thursday in the series rubber match. Kansas City got back in the win column after the Marlins snapped their nine-game winning streak on Wednesday. The stretch has the Royals back in the wild card chase, sitting just 4.0 games out of the second AL wild card spot.

The Red Sox lost to the Rays, 2-1, on Thursday in Tampa, splitting the four-game series. Wednesday and Thursday were the first back-to-back losses for Boston since August 10-11. Since then, they've gone 10-4, and are tied with Toronto for the AL East lead.

The Royals took two of three between the teams in Kansas City in May, and have won four of the last five overall against Boston. But since the 2014 season, the Red Sox hold an 11-6 edge in the series.

Ian Kennedy threw 8.0 shutout innings against the Twins on Saturday, allowing just four hits and picking up his eighth win of the season. The performance gives him an ERA of 0.79 in his last five starts. He is the first Royal to have a five-start span with a sub-1.00 ERA since Zack Greinke did it in 2009.

Steven Wright last pitched on August 5, where he threw a complete game shutout of the Dodgers in Los Angeles, allowing just three hits. This will be his first start after going on the DL for a strained right shoulder. Wright has one career start against the Royals, which came earlier this season. He allowed three runs in 8.0 innings, but took the loss.

The Royals and Red Sox are the only two teams in the majors with seven players with 100+ hits.

BOSTON -- If the Kansas City Royals are going to prevail in the rubber game of their three-game series against the Boston Red Sox on Sunday at Fenway Park, they're probably going to have to figure out how to keep second baseman Dustin Pedroia off the base paths.
The Red Sox leadoff man went 4-for-5 as Boston snapped a three-game losing skid with an 8-3 win against the Royals on Saturday. He has been on base in 18 straight games and has had a hit in 17 of those games. Before he grounded into a double play in the eighth inning he had a hit in 11 straight at-bats, one shy of the major-league record.

Raul Mondesi hit a bases-loaded triple and Eric Hosmer added a two-run single during an eight-run sixth inning, lifting the surging Royals to a 10-4 victory over the Boston Red Sox on Sunday night.
