The Athletics beat the Indians, 5-1, on Wednesday in Oakland in the series rubber match. Back-to-back wins on Tuesday and Wednesday were the first for Oakland since August 9-10. Even with the two wins, the A's have lost eight of their last 11.

The Cardinals lost to the Mets, 10-6, on Thursday in St. Louis, and in doing so lost the series 2-1. The loss dropped the Cardinals to 29-35 at home, as they remain the only team above .500 with a losing record at home.

This will be just the fifth series all-time between the teams, with the Cardinals holding an 8-4 edge. The A's are 1-6 in St. Louis all time, with the lone win coming in their last game there on June 20, 2010.

Ross Detwiler allowed six runs (all earned) in just 4.0 innings against the White Sox on Saturday in his third start of the season. After throwing 8.0 shutout innings in his first start on August 10, Detwiler has now allowed 11 runs in just 8.2 innings in his last two starts combined.

Luke Weaver allowed three runs (all earned) in 5.0 innings against the Phillies on Saturday, picking up his first career loss. The rookie will be making his third career start, still in search of his first win. Both of his prior starts have come on the road.

Stephen Piscotty has multi-hit games in four of his last seven games, hitting .379 in that span with three home runs and seven RBI. However, Piscotty has struggled against AL West teams this season, hitting just .220 against them in 13 games.

Jedd Gyorko homered and Weaver pitched six strong innings as the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Oakland Athletics 3-1 on Friday night.
