The Mariners lost, 5-0, to the Yankees yesterday, dropping the last two contests of the three-game series by a combined score of 10-1. Seattle has been blanked five times this year (tied for fifth fewest in MLB).

Chicago dropped a 5-3 home decision to Philadelphia last night, snapping its three-game winning streak in the process. The White Sox are 8-4 in their last 12 games at U.S. Cellular Field.

The M's took two of three from the Sox in these clubs' first meeting of the season in Seattle (July 18-20), winning each of their games by a single tally. Ten of the last 13 games between Seattle and Chicago at U.S. Cellular Field have been one-run affairs.

James Paxton, who allowed one run (unearned) in 8.1 IP in his last start on August 7 vs. the Angels, is making his first appearance since hitting the 15-day DL with a left elbow contusion. Paxton is one of 13 different starting pitchers the M's have used this season -- most of any AL club.

Anthony Ranaudo went 4.0 innings and allowed five runs (all earned) eight days ago vs. the Indians, but was bailed out by his offense, and received a no-decision in his second start of the season. Tonight marks Ranaudo's first career outing vs. the Mariners.

Robinson Cano went 2-for-4 last night, garnering his third straight multi-hit performance, and finishing up the series vs. the Yanks with seven singles (zero extra-base hits) in 12 at-bats. Cano is batting .351 vs. the Sox at U.S. Cellular Field since 2010 -- second best in the majors (minimum 75 AB).

CHICAGO (AP)  Todd Frazier's first season in Chicago has produced 31 home runs, but also an average hovering around .200 and 125 strikeouts.
On Thursday night, Frazier provided the clutch hitting the White Sox coveted when they traded for him in the offseason.
