The Royals beat the Twins, 2-1, at Kauffman Stadium on Sunday, sweeping four from Minnesota over the weekend, and winning their eighth straight game overall. Kansas City is 15-5 this month -- best in the AL, and second best in MLB overall (Cubs -- 16-4).

Miami defeated Pittsburgh, 3-2, on Sunday at PNC Park, sweeping three from the Pirates over the weekend. The Marlins have been involved in 10 one-run affairs this month -- tied with Seattle for most of any MLB club.

These clubs last met in 2013 with the Marlins taking two of three from the Royals at Kauffman Stadium. Kansas City and Miami have played 12 games all-time, each team winning six of those contests.

Yordano Ventura allowed just one run (earned) in 6.1 IP six days ago in Detroit, garnering a no-decision for the effort. Ventura, who will be facing the Fish for the first time in his career tonight, is 2-0 with a 2.52 ERA in four starts this month.

Andrew Cashner went 5.0 innings and allowed one run (earned) in Cincinnati last Wednesday, but the Marlins bullpen blew a lead, and he settled for a no-decision. Cashner is 0-2 with a 5.57 ERA in four starts since joining the Fish on July 29.

Alcides Escobar is batting .422 (19-for-45) with seven multi-hit performances during his current 10-game interleague hitting streak -- tied for the fourth-longest active streak in interleague contests. Escobar went 4-for-12 with a triple and an RBI the last time the Royals faced the Marlins in 2013 (three games).

MIAMI -- After snapping the Kansas City Royals' nine-game winning streak on Wednesday, the Miami Marlins will try to take the deciding game of the three-game series on Thursday.
The Marlins (66-60) have the edge over the Royals (65-61) in terms of the series finale's starting-pitching matchup.
